Chianti Classico Riserva 2017
Coming from Panzano in Chianti, the region’s “Gran Cru” and geographic center of Chianti Classico this is an elegant take on Chianti with a mentality closer to Burgundy than classic Tuscany.
The riserva is made from Sangiovese (95%) and Canaiolo Nero (5%) the fruit originates from vineyards which are over 40 years in age and the soil is rich in friable shale (Galestro) and limestone (Alberese).
Wine Profile: The result is a fruity, aromatic Sangiovese based wine with soft, fine tannins and expressive floral nose, think red roses and strawberries.
We love it paired with pasta dishes, thick tomato sauces, red meats and roasted root vegetables, Che Meraviglia!

Situated in the one of the best areas of Chianti Classico, Monte Bernardi have a firm reputation as one of the best. Bought in 2003 by Michael Schmelzer, certified organic and biodynamic in 2004, the estate is going from strength to strength. The vines are planted on a soil of a high rock content mixture which, depending on the vineyard, consists of shale, sandstone and limestone. The vineyards are perfectly situated at an altitude of 350 metres above sea level, surrounded by forests and enjoying a southern exposure, with the river Pesa flowing just a few hundred metres to the south. Grass and cover crops are grown in alternate rows: composted cow manure and biodynamic preparations are used. Harvesting is by hand, usually from late September until mid-October. None of the wines are filtered. They are also vegan.
